2026 General Elections Candidates Fine Arts Education Questionnaire

In August, the Texas Arts Education Campaign, in collaboration with Texas Music Educators Association, sent a questionnaire to qualified candidates for the Texas Legislature and State Board of Education. Our goal was to gather their views on the importance of fine arts education and share their responses with voters. As you prepare to vote, we encourage you to review these results and share them with your community. While we don’t endorse specific candidates, we believe it’s important for you to understand their positions on arts education.

Texas requires our schools to teach the arts. It is past time we put the resources behind that promise and give educators the instruments, supplies, facilities and support they need to inspire the next generation. We live in a state that can find millions for stadiums. We can find the money for the classroom where a child first picks up a trumpet, steps onto a stage or discovers they can paint. In my district office, our Artist of the Month program celebrates Texas artists and It's allowed me to see firsthand how art brings folks together to tell the stories of our communities. I will always fight to fully fund our public schools, respect the educators doing this work and make sure fine arts programs are treated as essential to educating every child.

	Comments: Fine arts education is deeply personal to me because the arts were an important part of my own education and helped shape the person I became. From elementary school through high school, I participated in school choir, and in high school I was a member of both the gospel choir and concert choir. I was also active in drama and theater, experiences that ultimately led me to receive two theater scholarships and earn my bachelor’s degree in Speech Communications and Theatre Arts. Because of that background, I understand firsthand that fine arts education is much more than an extracurricular activity. The arts help students develop confidence, creativity, discipline, communication skills, teamwork, and a sense of belonging. They also give students opportunities to discover talents and possibilities they may not have recognized in themselves otherwise. I have a genuine love for the arts and believe every student, regardless of where they live or the resources available in their school district, should have access to meaningful fine arts education. As a legislator, I would value the opportunity to support policies and investments that protect and expand those opportunities for Texas students.

	Comments: Fine arts are a hill I will die on. Piano and violin were my main extracurricular from the age of 6 until I graduated college. My sister followed the same path and is a professional musician today. Thanks to my music lessons, classes, and activities, I made life-long friends (my campaign logo was designed by my 5th grade stand partner), developed cognitive and fine motor skills, and discovered other arts such as theater. My high school orchestra even performed at Carnegie Hall. Let me be clear: Sports and fine arts should not be in competition with each other. They are both healthy ways to develop young minds and bodies and teach culture. Yet, even as a teen I saw how sports teams were given new uniforms while music and art programs were threatened with budget cuts. As adults, our job is sculpt well-rounded future citizens. Students should be given affordable opportunities explore their interests in every area, from robotics to choir to painting to basketball.

I had to work hard to prove I meant it, but that struggle only made me more determined. Band camp, honor band, and the Mississippi Lions All-State Band taught me that you can do hard things if you’re willing to put in the work. Every child should have that chance.

	Comments: I am so thankful for the fine arts classes that I had as a child growing up. Never thought I'd grow up to see a day where it was under attack. Fine arts education, in particular music, bolsters students abilities in Math, History, Science etc...Literally unlocks parts of the mind. Music and Math are 1 in the same. Art and dance build confidence and develop interpersonal skills. Theater gives the busy body kid a chance to thrive; the recluse a chance to contribute meaningfully to a broader picture. Fine arts is an outlet and beyond. The opportunities which can only come from fine arts programs are endless. If we don't get serious about fully funding this in public schools--we are robbing our children of the very thing that drives a robust education. If you look at the "smartest" countries' education systems---they include robust and mandatory fine arts curriculum. Just like we make a way to fund athletics and pitch STEM---this should be equally as important. The money is always there---we have to push harder to get that money routed to the right place.

He had played the trumpet since 5th grade and found enjoyment in it, but it wasn't until his injury "sidelined" him that he recognized that his musical talent could also get him on the field! After graduating 3rd in his high school class, he was accepted at University of Texas - Austin in Mechanical Engineering and went on to become part of the Longhorn Band. 	Comments: A Message from the Founder of The Art of Caring As the founder of The Art of Caring, I believe art and music should be more than extracurricular activities—they can be powerful tools for learning, emotional expression, connection, and overall well-being. Our communities continue to face growing mental health and emotional challenges, especially among children and young people. We must advocate for programs that give individuals healthy and creative ways to express themselves, build confidence, develop meaningful connections, and discover their unique strengths. I would especially like to see more opportunities created for children with learning disabilities and different learning needs. Every child learns and communicates differently, and traditional approaches may not always allow them to fully demonstrate their abilities. Art, music, movement, and other creative programs can provide another pathway for children to learn, participate, express themselves, and feel included. Through The Art of Caring, my hope is to advocate for greater access to art, music, creative expression, and wellness programs in our schools and throughout our communities. 	Comments: As a Science/Math teacher, I learned early on that my most of my Honors students were in band or choir. Many took Art and theater, and a quarter of them were in sports. When I became a mom, I made sure that they took piano lessons as soon as they were able. My eldest went on in choir and was accepted into Baylor University Music Program on Voice. My youngest was in Band and was offered a spot in Band when she entered college. As an administrator, I was the appraiser to the Fine Arts Department where I advocated fiercely for more teachers. I increased our department allotment by 5 teachers. I saw the dedication of those teachers and what they were able to accomplish. To cut programs that foster creativity and self expression in a positive way is a disservice to our children. These programs need to be extended, not curtailed or eliminated and I will do what I can to make that happen.

That is quite surprising to me, however I am aware that there are many unfunded or underfunded state mandates and that is definitely one of the things I hope to address if I'm elected. I am opposed to the TEFA act and the voucher program and will do everything possible to repeal it and shift this funding back to public schools. I will also do every thing possible to get funding per student increased so Texas schools can again be among the best in the nation.

	Comments: The fine arts develop the creative thinking skills that will be demanded of us if we are to survive a problem-plagued future! Research has long shown that music improves math skills, and I can't even imagine scientific discoveries without artistic abilities being employed to record and share. Moreover, the fine arts give our lives meaning, help us understand ourselves and our fellow humans, provide necessary moments of joy and wonder, and perhaps most importantly allow students to express themselves, their feelings, their visions of the world in which they live. As an English teacher for 32 years, my students often used the fine arts to delve more deeply into the literature we studied and to authentically express what they garnered from our literary studies. As a teacher myself, I watched a quiet, average English student become a popular star in my classroom when he was allowed to express his understanding of a novel's tone by playing and creating an original piano score. As I think of the teachers who prepared me most for holding the political position I aspired to (HD69's State Representative), I think of my elementary school music teacher who talked with my class about her experience of singing in a huge auditorium--the kind I was able to speak in at the Texas Democratic Convention this year--and who first put me in front of audiences and made me comfortable there! We must support fine arts education not just because doing so supports the other core subjects, not just for the beauty and awe it awakens us to, and not just because of the source of expression it provides, strengthening the mental health of our student body and, thus, humanity. We must support fine arts because for many students, art, band, film class, drama, choir, or other fine arts "electives" are the reason the get up and come to school each day, but also because for many students it is the best part of their whole day. Thus, fine arts undergirds our whole school system and provide a survival framework for a huge portion of our population. I can't imagine my life without the paintings and sculptures and films I love, the music I listen to, the dramas and operas and concerts I attend. Certainly, I can't imagine a school without fine arts, and if elected I will use my position to support fine arts with just as much ferver as I fight to keep our public schools funded at and above the national average and full of teachers finally paid at levels commensorate with their experience, talent, and education.

My brother helped pay for his engineering degree through choir scholarships, and my sister in law went to college to become a music teacher and now uses those skills in a Title I school, helping students find expression, belonging, and sometimes simply an outlet when life outside the classroom is difficult. My own oldest child participated in music therapy when she was nonverbal, and I saw firsthand that the arts can reach a child in ways a traditional classroom sometimes cannot. The arts also reach much further than the stage, band hall, or art room. The foundations students learn through music, theater, dance, and visual arts show up in the patterns we recognize, the technology and apps we design, the homes and communities we build, the way we communicate, and the creativity we bring into nearly every profession. A student should not be pulled from the class where they finally feel successful because we need another hour of test preparation, and fine arts should not be the first thing sacrificed when budgets become difficult. When we fund fine arts in our public schools and colleges, we are not funding an extra. We are funding scholarships, careers, therapy, creativity, discipline, expression, and for some children, the place at school where they finally discover that they belong.

I immediately enrolled her in piano lessons, (because music helps improve math skills) and when she got to 6th grade she began playing the oboe in Band. By the time she was in 7th grade, she was making As in Math. I know that a large part of her success in overcoming this deficit was due to piano and Band, both academically and in regard to her confidence. My husband and I were both Band students as well. As a former band geek and choir member, I know the importance of Fine Arts. It helps produce a more well rounded student as well as tapping into developing critical thinking skills. 	Comments: This one is easy for me. My father was trained as a tenor at the New England Conservatory of Music. He used to sing on the Art Linkletter Show on the radio. He joined the Marines in WWII and became a bona fide war hero. My mother was also a Marine and they are buried together at Arlington National Cemetery. The White House Marine Corps band played at his funeral. In addition to the performing arts, our children need to be trained in all other art forms if we as a society are to have any hope to produce an enlightened generation to command the future.

	Comments: Music has been an integral part of my life since I was 3 years old. By the time I was 10, I could play any stringed instrument, the piano, drums, and more. Music and the arts develop critical neurological pathways in the brain, and it is in the child's development years, that the most important window of opportunity presents itself. The language of music enables the language of math, computer coding, problem solving, and endless avenues of analysis and critical thinking. I have been blessed with the tutelage of many artists, privately, and via institutions like the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, HB Studios, The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, Black Nexxus Acting Studio, and many coaches of music and acting. I am grateful for the life skills, and for the mental and emotional development I received, and look forward to supporting the Arts as the State Representative of Texas House District 117. 	Comments: We should fully-fund public schools; unfortunately, special interests in the Texas Legislature are working against students, parents, and teachers. This last session, "voucher advocates" shifted billions of dollars from public schools to private schools. This ploy to privatize public education has led to local budget deficits, more school closures, and higher property taxes. When it comes to public school funding, Texas ranks 43rd and that is unacceptable. That is why, I am committed to working with Democrats and Republicans alike, to increase the per-pupil allotment to the national average. Additionally, I will continue to seek more funding for school safety, teacher pay increases, and special needs programs. By electing more "pro-public school" legislators, we will have a fighting chance in Austin to fully fund our schools and that includes fine art education opportunities.

	Comments: Fine arts education has had a deeply personal impact on my family and on my own life. My sons played the viola and trumpet, and I participated in theatre arts as a child. I still remember being featured as the Ace of Hearts in my middle school production of Alice in Wonderland. I was a child who had experienced significant trauma, and singing, dancing, acting, and escaping into a world of imagination gave me confidence, joy, and a sense of possibility. The arts created a safe place where I could express myself, dream beyond my circumstances, and begin to discover my voice. I also understand the powerful impact fine arts can have on students with special needs. Music, movement, theatre, and visual expression can help students communicate, build confidence, develop social and emotional skills, and participate in ways that traditional classrooms may not always allow. Fine arts education is not an extra; it can be a lifeline.

	Comments: I support the arts 120%. As an educator and as a parent, I have seen firsthand how music and the arts develop creativity, discipline, confidence, collaboration, and intellectual curiosity. All three of my children were born in Texas and attended the same Texas public school district from kindergarten through high school. All three participated in the school band and developed a love for music, from classical to contemporary, and for playing instruments and using new technologies to create music and beats. One of my children is a graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA), where she pursued intensive arts training in New York City and Los Angeles and is now in New York pursuing her career as an artist. As her mother, I have also witnessed something that our education system and our society must take seriously. Extraordinarily talented young people can work incredibly hard to develop their gifts and still struggle to build sustainable careers in the arts. We should not treat artistic talent as an extracurricular luxury. We should nurture it, and create pathways that allow young people to turn talent into meaningful lives and careers. One of my sons, a trumpeter, has exceptional mathematical and analytical abilities and is now a junior pursuing a degree in engineering at Texas A&M University. Yet, music has remained an important part of his intellectual development. My youngest, a trombonist, has an extraordinary command of logic and language. And is about to enter Texas A&M University to pursue economics, with the intention of attending law school. And as a personal passion, studies the history and evolution of music from classical to contemporary forms, while also creating beats, sampling music, and exploring how traditional music intersects with new technology. I strongly support STEM education, but not without the arts. I support STEAM. Music, theater, visual arts, dance, and other creatives disciplines belong in a well-rounded public education. And should be accessible to every student, regardless of ZIP code or family income. If elected to represent District 9 on the Texas State Board of Education, I will be a fearless advocate for strong, accessible arts education in Texas public schools and for the educators who make those opportunities possible. The arts are not an extra. They are part of educating the whole child.
